This Tamarac install went up on a condo wall that already had a wall-mounted fire alarm strobe above it — the kind of notification device found in multi-family buildings, not a typical single-family smoke detector. That changed where the TV could go before anything else did.
Working around life-safety equipment, not touching it
A wall-mounted fire alarm strobe is governed by its own code requirements — NFPA 72 specifies it needs to sit within a set mounting-height range and stay unobstructed so its light reaches the room it's meant to alert. None of that is something a TV installer modifies or adjusts; the strobe stays exactly where it's supposed to be, installed and maintained by whoever handles the building's fire system. Our job is limited to what happens around it: positioning the TV low enough and far enough to the side that it doesn't sit in the strobe's direct sightline into the room, not touching the device itself in any way.
In-wall cable concealment, planned around the same constraint
With the strobe fixed in place above, the cable run had the same consideration built in — routed to stay clear of the strobe's mounting point and wiring rather than crossing anywhere near it. The low-voltage exit plate landed near the existing outlet, keeping the whole run in territory that has nothing to do with the building's fire system.
Checking what's on the wall before checking what's in it
Most of what we probe for before drilling is inside the wall — studs, wiring, plumbing. A wall-mounted strobe is a reminder to look at what's already on the wall's surface too, not just what's behind it, before deciding where anything goes.
The result: a TV mounted securely with full in-wall cable concealment, positioned to keep the building's fire alarm strobe fully unobstructed — a constraint from the room, not from the TV itself.
